A Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is a power electronic device used to manage network voltage by absorbing or providing reactive power. NIE Networks will deploy a STATCOM on an 11kV circuit which is experiencing both high voltage (due to distributed generation) and low voltage (due to load), to control voltages within tighter boundaries.

The objectives of the STATCOM project are to:

  • Improve utilisation of network assets
  • Control voltages within tighter boundaries
  • Defer high cost network reinforcements
  • Accommodate further demand and micro generation which would otherwise be constrained by voltage levels
