What's the project about

A STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) is an advanced power electronic device used to regulate network voltages by absorbing or producing reactive power. More commonly associated with transmission systems and large scale renewable projects, we are trialling the use of STATCOMs on the distribution network, deploying STATCOM units on a high voltage distribution circuit which experiences both high voltage (due to distributed generation) and low voltage (due to demand), to maintain network voltages within statutory limits while connecting further generation and demand.

Objectives

The objectives of the STATCOM project are to:

  • Improve utilisation of network assets
  • Control voltages within tighter boundaries
  • Defer high cost network reinforcements
  • Accommodate further demand and micro generation which would otherwise be constrained by voltage levels

Progress

  • Appoint consultants to support the project team
  • Technology assessment complete
  • Trial site selection criteria developed and site selection complete
  • System architecture agreed and equipment specification developed
  • Equipment procurement complete and factory acceptance testing undertaken
  • Training build completed
  • System integration (SCADA) offline work completed
