Remember the 4 simple rules to ensure lifting slings are not overloaded

  1. Straight lifts - never exceed the marked SWL/WLL and in the case of multi-leg slings the specified angle or range of angles
  2. When using slings in choke hitch multiply the marked SWL/WLL by 0.8 to obtain the reduced maximum load the sling may lift, i.e. reduce the SWL/WLL by 20%. try to avoid further reductions when choking slings.
  3. Multi-leg slings - when using less than the full number of legs, reduce its SWL/WLL in proportion to the number of legs in use, i.e. one leg of a two-leg sling = ½ marked SWL/WLL, three legs of a four-leg sling = ¾ marked SWL/WLL
  4. Protect slings against sharp edges, and when using chain slings avoid point loading any individual chain link
