  • I have bought land/property with electricity equipment on it – what do I do?

If there are already wayleave agreements in place on the land or property that you have purchased, these will transfer to you (the new owner) as will the wayleave payments. You, or someone managing your affairs, will need to inform NIE Networks of the change of ownership. You can do this online bought land form.

  • I have sold land/property with electricity equipment on it – what do I do?

If there are already wayleave agreements in place on the land or property that you have sold, these will  transfer to the new owner as will the wayleave payments. If you are no longer the owner of this land, you will no longer have rights to claim wayleave payments for this land. You, or someone managing your affairs, will need to inform NIE Networks of the change of ownership. You can do this via this online sold land form.

  • Parts of my land/property have changed ownership - what do I do?

If there are already wayleave agreements in place on the parts of land that have changed ownership, these will transfer to the new owner as will the wayleave payments. If you are no longer the owner of this land, you will no longer have rights to claim wayleave payments for this land. You, or someone managing your affairs, will need to inform NIE Networks of the change of ownership. You can do this via this online sold land form.

  • I need to update my address details

You can contact our team to update your address details by filling in this online change of address form.

Remember – if you are no longer the owner of the property where the electricity equipment is sited, you no longer have rights to claim the wayleave payment for this equipment. This agreement and payment should transfer to the new owner.

  • What if there is more than one owner of the land? Can a payment be split?

If the land or property where the electricity equipment is sited transfers into joint or co-ownership, a payee should be nominated to receive the payment on behalf of all the owners. Unfortunately, the payment cannot be split.

  • How often will I receive a wayleave payment?

Wayleave payments are made annually in arrears by cheque. These will be sent to your address and made payable to the owner of the land.

Please note our minimum cheque value is £2.00. If your payment is less than £2.00 per year we will wait until it has accumulated before payment is made.

  • Can you make wayleave payments directly to my bank account?

No. All wayleave payments are currently paid by cheque. These will be sent to your address and made payable to the owner of the land.

  • What do I do if my cheque is out of date?

Cheques remain valid for six months. If you haven’t cashed your wayleave payment within that period, you should return any out of date original cheques to the below address with a note to confirm you would like the cheque to be re-issued:

    NIE Networks
    Wayleave Payments
    120 Malone Road
    Belfast
    BT9 5HT

  • What do I do if I don’t have a bank account?

You should nominate someone with a bank account to accept the payment on your behalf. You should then inform us in writing of this ‘nominated person’ including signatures of both parties and return the original cheque if applicable. Please write to:

    NIE Networks
    Wayleave payments
    120 Malone Road
    Belfast
    BT9 5HT

  • Am I entitled to a wayleave payment?

You are entitled to a wayleave payment when at least one other party takes their electricity supply from the equipment on your land.

If you think you are entitled to a wayleave payment but are not currently receiving it then you should contact us on 03457 643643 and our team will look into it for you.

  • Can I take my wayleave payment off my electricity bill?

No. NIE Networks is the electricity network company and does not bill you directly for your electricity. Wayleave payments are only made by cheque on an annual basis.

  • Can I obtain a copy of my wayleave agreement(s)?

Yes. However, you should note that copy agreements can only be issued to the landowner or someone acting on the landowner’s behalf (eg. a solicitor).

Copies of your wayleave agreements will be sent to you in hard copy by post. Due to the volume of requests, this could take several weeks.

You will need to make your request in writing including details of the agreement numbers or maps. You should send your request to:

    NIE Networks
    Wayleave Payments
    120 Malone Road
    Belfast
    BT9 5HT

  • What do I do if I move house?

If you are still the owner of the land where the electricity equipment is sited, then you just need to let us know about your new address and contact details. You can do this by completing this online change of address form.

If you are no longer the owner of the land where the electricity equipment is sited, then you should complete an online sold land form.

  • I need a land survey relating to equipment for wayleave payments

If you need to organise a property survey in order to clarify your wayleave payments, you will have received a letter or email from a NIE Networks’ wayleave officer. You should contact them directly to organise this – their details will be on the correspondence. If you are unable to reach them, please contact 03457 643 643 and you will be re-directed to an appropriate member of staff.
