At NIE Networks we are working to reduce emissions from our operations. Specifically, we want to halve our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and become Net Positive by 2050 if not sooner. To make this happen we are working on climate change mitigation actions like electrifying our fleet. We are also working on climate change adaptation, for example through emergency planning and our response to extreme weather events.

We are also working to improve resource use and circularity. Steps towards this include materials being sustainably sourced, using repurposed or recycled materials and ensuring end-of-life plans are in place for materials and equipment.

Case Study - Office energy efficiency improvements

In 2021 NIE Networks began consolidating its Belfast offices with staff relocating to the refurbished Danesfort building. The refurbishment brought most of the building to the standard of Energy Performance Certificate Grade A23, a significant improvement on the previous D rating. This consolidation from five offices to one has reduced energy consumption, improved efficiency, reduced inter-office travel and provided a healthier workspace for staff. The next steps in this journey of energy efficiency improvements will include:

  • Rebuilding the Craigavon and Ballymena depots and the new training school to meet Net Zero Emissions Building standards to improve energy efficiency.
  • Installing solar photovoltaic (PV) generation at all suitable office buildings.
  • Reducing energy use in buildings by 25% by 2030.
  • Facilitating the connection of more renewable generation in working towards the 80% RES-E target in the Energy Strategy (Northern Ireland) 2030.
