NIE NETWORKS
1-9 MONTHS
After your connection application has been confirmed (upon receipt of your Acceptance of Terms and deposit payment), we will proceed with scheduling site visits. These are typically completed within 7-10 working days.
In some cases, depending on the complexity of your connection design and the local terrain, a full site survey may be necessary. A survey could take up to 3 months to complete.
If the construction method requires access through land that is not owned by you, then NIE Networks will need to secure permission from that landowner to access and work on their land before any work can proceed. This could take up to 3 months to complete.
If your connection requires electricity equipment to be installed on land owned by others, then it will be necessary to obtain the legal consents for a wayleave lease or easement from the landowners. These negotiations with the landowners can take up to 9 months or longer. To help speed up the process, we encourage you to begin discussions with the landowners early. For more details, please watch the short video above to learn about the legal consents process.
It may also be necessary to obtain planning permission for the connection works for example if a new pole or substation is required. The planning application and the local planning authority's decision process could take 6 months or more to complete.
It will also be necessary to consider if your planning permission has been decided before progressing to the next stage.
Depending on survey results, landowner negotiations, legal consents, and planning permission requirements, additional costs may apply. If this happens, we'll provide an updated quote with a revised design. We will keep you informed throughout the process to ensure transparency and clarity.

To ensure we can complete the job, you need to register with an electricity supplier. This will be the company that will issue your electricity bill and deal with any queries you have about your bill. We have provided a helpful tool here: Find My Electricity Supplier.

6-8 WEEKS
Once full payment (if applicable) has been received and all legal requirements are finalised, we will contact you to arrange a start date for your work.
Please ensure your site is prepared according to the agreed design and that your electrical consultant’s work is fully completed.
If your connection design requires NIE Networks to carry out the excavation, this will typically be done 1-2 days before meter connection.
If excavation work is being undertaken by others, it must be completed before our start date, as we cannot begin work until this is done.
For guidance on preparing your site, please watch our short Construction video above.
If you selected Option 2 then there will be a different process to complete the work on-site. Use the Option 2 tab above to find out more.

It is important that you show us where your site is located so we can plan and quote the appropriate connection to the existing electricity network.
We recommend that your architect prepares this drawing, if you have appointed one.
We will need a scaled map at 1:2500, with your site boundary marked in red.
It is important that this drawing:
- shows us where your site is located and what its boundaries are so that we can identify where it is in relation to the existing electricity network
- clearly shows any existing roads adjacent to your site including the road name,
- clearly shows any property surrounding your site.
Permitted file types:

It is important that we know the layout of your proposed development so we can design the cables in the most suitable position, plan the overhead line clearances to the proposed ground and buildings etc.
We recommend that your architect prepares this drawing, if you have appointed one.
We will need a plan at an appropriate scale. Our preference is 1:500 provided in .dwg format.
It is important that this plan clearly shows:
- the outline of your property within your site boundary
- your proposed meter position
- existing and proposed ground levels.
The location of the proposed meter will affect your connection offer so this should be accurate. Any changes at a later date will affect your offer and delay your connection.
Note: the external meter position on new constructions must be on the front elevation or within 2 metres of the front elevation on a side elevation.
Permitted file types:
AutoCAD (preferred option) (.dwg)
Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
The maximum file size allowed is 20 MB. -
We recommend that you seek assistance from your electrician when completing the load details for the appliances that you are planning to install.
We will need details of any air conditioning, heat pumps (air source, ground source or other types), water heaters, EV chargers, lifts, motors, refrigeration, welders, cranes, swimming pools, power showers, under floor heating, or any other pieces of equipment that are running high loads:
- Maximium import capacity
- Earthing terminal
- Rating of each appliance
- Phase required
- Starting method of each appliance
- Starting current of each appliance
- Number of starts per hour of each appliance
When you apply online, you can share a link to the load details section to your electrician to complete it on your behalf. Or if preferred, you can print the load details section and ask your electrician to complete this information manually and then you can enter it into your saved application.
-
We will also need to know:
- If you require a temporary supply for less than 12 months
- If you require a feasibility study or an outline budget, or if you wish to receive a full quote for works that will be proceeding to installation and commissioning stage
- If you have acquired ownership of the site at the time of this connection application
- If there is a construction sequence that will affect the installation sequence of the conneciton works
- If you are planning to connect any type of generation equipment in the future e.g. you will install solar panels, battery storage, EV Chargers after this connection has been completed.
- When you would like your connection work complete. When considering your date of completion, please refer to the connections process timeline as your connections work may take up to 9 months to complete.
