Network Capacity Map

Disclaimer

We have developed the network capacity map to assist you with connections applications at the primary substation level of the distribution network. The map gives a general illustration of availability and cannot be relied upon to assess the terms of connection for specific premises. Whilst we use reasonable endeavours to ensure that the network capacity map and related information is accurate, we do not warrant, and do not accept any responsibility or liability for, the accuracy or completeness of the content or for any loss which may arise from reliance on the network capacity map or related information. Capacity Map FAQs

What is the meaning of the “Available Capacity” filter?
The Available Capacity has 4 filter levels. “High”, “Medium”, “Low” and “Contact for info”. These filters refer to the available capacity remaining for the selected “Capacity Mode” filter.

What is the meaning of the “Capacity Mode” filter?
The “Capacity Mode” filter allows the user to colour code the map based on the information they require. This includes Demand Capacity (for demand connections), generation capacity (for generation connections) and fault level capacity.

What is the meaning of the “Substation Type” filter?
Substations can be filtered on or off by their “Substation Type”. A “Bulk” substation type is a 110kV/33kV substation and the “Primary” substation type refers to 33kV/11kV substations and also 33kV/6.6kV substations.

How are the pin colours calculated for a primary substation?
The pins are coloured based on the worst case capacity for the selected primary substation, the 33kV distribution network connecting that substation to the bulk supply point and the capacity at the bulk supply point itself.

How are the pin colours calculated for a bulk supply point?
The pins are based on the worst case capacity for the selected bulk supply point.

What are the thresholds for each pin colour when viewing “Demand” or “Generation” capacity?
When viewing demand or generation capacity the pin colour coding is based on the worst applicable colour code as defined below:

Primary Substation Demand
0 MVA – Red (I.E. No available capacity).
>0 MVA to <=1 MVA – Amber (I.E. Capacity greater than 0MVA and less than or equal to 1MVA).
>1 MVA – Green ( I.E. Capacity greater than 1 MVA).
Data unavailable – Blue

Bulk Supply Point and 33kV distribution network demand:
0 MVA – Red  (I.E. No available capacity).
>0 MVA to <= 5 MVA – Amber (I.E. Capacity greater than 0MVA and less than or equal to 5 MVA).
>5 MVA – Green ( I.E. Capacity greater than 5 MVA).
Data unavailable – Blue

What are the thresholds for each pin colour when viewing “Fault Level” capacity?
When viewing fault level capacity the pin colour coding is based on the worst applicable colour code as defined below (applicable to primary substations, 33kV distribution network and Bulk Supply Points):
0 MVA – Red (I.E. No available capacity).
>0 MVA to <= 50MVA – Amber (I.E. Capacity greater than 0MVA and less than or equal to 50MVA).
> 50 MVA – Green ( I.E. Capacity greater than 1 MVA).
Data unavailable – Blue

What do the letters on the map pins mean?
P = Primary substation (I.E. 33kV / 11kV OR 33kV / 6.6kV substation).
B = Bulk Supply Point (I.E. 110kV / 33kV substation).
PP  = Dual Primary Substation (I.E. Both 33kV / 11kV AND 33kV / 6.6kV substations at one site).
BP = Combined Bulk Supply Point and Primary substation (I.e. 110kV / 33kV AND either 33kV / 11kV OR 33kV / 6.6kV substations at one site).

For PP and BP substation types the map pins may be split into two different colours. E.G. A “BP” pin may be green on the “B” half and yellow on the “P” half. This represents high available capacity at the Bulk Supply Point and medium available capacity at the primary.

Key

  • B pin – Bulk Substation
(110kV / 33kV substation).

  • P pin – Primary Substation
(33kV / 11kV OR 33kV / 6.6kV substation).

  • BP pin – Bulk Primary Combined Substation
(110 kV / 33kV substation AND either 33kV / 11kV substation OR 33kV / 6.6kV substation at one site).

  • PP pin – Dual Primary Combined Substation
(33kV / 11kV AND 33kV / 6.6kV substation at one site).

The network capacity map provides an indication of the networks capability to connect loads greater than 200 Amps and generators applying under G99 to major substations. This map gives constraints down to primary substation level only. Visit Connections for more information on costs or to apply for a connection. The colour gradings are intended to guide the user to areas of the network where a connection is more likely to be achieved without significant reinforcement. The main points to note regarding the map are:

  • The data on this map is provided as an indication only and is subject to change.
  • Available demand capacity figures are based on peak winter network demands for 2022/2023 which are recorded between November and March each year.
  • Reverse power headroom is calculated using generation application queue information as of July 2023, incorporating both connected generation and committed to connect generation.
  • Available fault level capacity figures are based on the lower of either the make or break fault level ratings at each individual site as of Winter 2022/2023.
  • 33kV network availability does not infer availability on the lower voltage levels; therefore, there may be reinforcement costs associated with connection to the 11kV, 6.6kV and low voltage network.
  • In some cases the available capacity shown may already be contracted to individual customers but is not currently being fully utilised.
  • Connections to the substations with an overall RED classification are still possible; however, there might be a requirement for significant network reinforcement to overcome the impact on the network constraints.
  • The post code search functionality will display a pin at the postcode which was entered. In some cases the postcode may not be supplied by the geographically closest substation.
  • A number of primary substation capacities are interdependent on other substations or circuit capacities. Where applicable this is stated within the “Show Information Window”.
  • This capacity map illustrates indicative distribution capacity only and does not represent the availability of transmission capacity at each node.
