What are smart grids?

A smart grid is an electricity grid that uses digital technology to deliver electricity from suppliers to consumers. This process helps to save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability.

Smart grids use cutting edge technologies to provide greater information on energy usage to both the customer and to the electricity network company.

They are more reliable as they allow us at Northern Ireland Electricity Networks (NIE Networks) to have enhanced visibility in fault situations.  Smart grids can help to lower the peak electricity demand and as a result lessen the need for network reinforcement that would be needed to cope with peak demands.
