Upgrading the electricity network in Cloughmills

Our investment in Cloughmills will take seven months to complete and we are working with SPIE to deliver the project. SPIE Distribution & Transmission is one of the UK’s leading specialist providers of overhead line services to the utility market.

The company has secured two framework contracts with NIE Networks to assist in the refurbishment of the distribution and transmission networks. SPIE will carry out renovation and new build works on the transmission network (110kV and 275kV) and will also restore and replace the distribution wood pole network up to, and including, 33kV. Over 130 SPIE linespeople are currently employed on both contracts.

Mike Snee, Managing Director at SPIE, comments: “It’s vital to us that we have a strong and progressive relationship with NIE Networks. The electricity distribution industry operates in a regulated environment and as such there are stringent requirements for the service providers to deliver a safe, efficient and customer orientated service to the end user – the general public. SPIE endeavours to meet these requirements head-on and is proud to be participating in this work.”

Jonathan Walsh, Contracts Manager at NIE Networks, says: “We are delighted to be teaming with SPIE on this programme of investment. We first worked with SPIE in 2009. Since then, our business relationship has gone from strength to strength; they have completed a number of projects with us, from distribution and transmission to assistance with storm damage repairs. That’s why we can be so confident in their ability this time around.”

Investing Over £1million in Cloughmills

As part of our ongoing investment in the electricity network, NIE Networks will begin a seven month programme of work to upgrade part of the 11,000 volt (11kV) circuit around Cloughmills. This investment totals over £1million and will help improve the reliability of the network in the area.

We will be upgrading over 80km of lines, taking in some of the townlands shown above. The work, which will be carried out by our contractor SPIE, will include the replacement of 517 poles, upgrading of an additional 300 poles and the renewal of 176 spans of new overhead line.

In addition, 234 pole mounted transformers will also be upgraded. We are writing to around 900 customers in the area, who may be affected by this investment work. All land owners will be contacted by SPIE prior to work commencing. We may need to interrupt your electricity supply to allow our contractors to work safely, but we will give you notice so that you can make alternative arrangements.

Our investment work will begin in September 2016 and will complete in Spring 2017.
